We are learning to read for longer periods of time and making connections between the text and ourselves.  Please take the time every afternoon or evening at home to read for at least 15 minutes with your child. They should have a plastic zipper bag with 2 books  on their level that they can read. If they come home with the same books re-read them because that helps to build fluency and recognition of those sight words. Also take them to the public library. Did you know they let you check out 25 books at a time?! Wow!

They can access many leveled readers in the Razkids link.

Reading

Writing and Word Work

We write every day and our stories come from our experiences at home. You can help with writing by sitting and working with your child on their word lists. At this age they need your supervision to do work at home. Practicing spelling the words in their composition notebooks and reading the sight words in their purple folders helps your child become a better reader and writer.

They can access their word lists on Spelling City in the favorite websites link.

Math

At this age children learn math by doing. Give your child the opportunity to sort coins and to tell you what hour it is by looking at the short hand on the clock. You can work with them on their basic addition and subtraction facts by counting beans or small items. Have them help you measure when you are cooking or building something. Learning math at this age is all about looking for patterns. Make it fun and they'll learn they are good at it.

Also allow them to get on the Internet. I have many links to great activities on Edmodo, Learning.com and Pearson.
